Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian (Canadian-American) is an activist in the field of feminist media, public speaker and Canadian. She is the founder of Feminist Frequency the website which provides commentary and videos on depictions of women's roles in popular cultural. Anita Sarkeesian has been a journalist, media critic and a prestigious feminist for more than a decade. Feminist Frequency is a non-profit educational website which investigates representations of women in popular culture narratives. Committed to deconstructing the stereotypes associated with women in pop culture she also works to highlight issues related to targeted exploitation of women and other marginalized classes of individuals in the internet environment. Sarkeesian, who has an MA in Social and Political Thinking at York University, is a sought after public speaking. She has delivered speeches at the TEDxWomen festival as well as United Nations Broadband Working Group for Gender. At a young age Sarkeesian was captivated with gender issues as well as feminist ideas. While still at school in 2009 she started her Feminist Frequency Website. She was a young woman who wanted to create a series of web videos which would explore gender representations in video games. However, she became victimized by online harassment. But the harassment did not discourage her. It only strengthened her as a journalist who is feminist. In recognition of the many contributions she has made to feminism, she is recognized with numerous awards. Anita Sarkeesian, a media critic who has won numerous awards and created Feminist Frequency as an educational non-profit that examines the ways women are depicted within popular culture narratives.
